Luke Keeler talks about Conrad Cummings rumours

Luke Keeler shared in Irish fight fans’s excitement when a possible February 2th7 clash with Coalisland middleweight Conrad Cummings was muted earlier this month, but believes it’s failure to materialise may just be one of those disguised blessings.

The boxing rumour mill was churning out news of a possible Cyclone versus Matchroom all-Ireland middleweight clash on the undercard of the massive Carl Frampton versus Scott Quigg World title fight.

It was said 160lbs Irish prospects Keeler and Cummings would pair off on the PPV fight night in the Manchester Arena, but while Shane McGuigan-trained talent Cummings has just recently been confirmed on the card, it doesn’t seem as though Keeler will provide the opposition.

Speaking to Irish-boxing.com ‘Cool Hand’ claims he was open to the bout, but suggests the pair may be best served letting it build as both build their profiles and records.

Keeler admits Cummings provided him with perfect excuse and opportunity to secure a slot on what could prove the biggest watched fight night outside of America this year, but the fighter who looks set for three quick fights in succession before May isn’t too disappointed the rumours didn’t become truth as he see’s it as a big fight down the line.

“I seen that out there and mentioned and when asked about it I said I would love the fight,” Keeler told Irish-boxing.com

“I am sure Conrad was the same. To be honest I was thinking that February 27 show was a massive show, one every fighter would want to be on.

“Conrad had the slot so it seemed a natural way for me to get on the card and be in a good fight. Maybe it was a bit soon to make, we could build it into something bigger down the road.

“It is not a big deal it’s not happening now. If the fight was there I would jump at it, but I think a few more fights down the line and it could be a big fight in it’s own right and we could get paid more. It would be great to be on the card, but maybe it’s a blessing in disguise.”
