Thomas Finnegan battles to tough debut win

Thomas Finnegan began his professional career with a win tonight in Dublin, but ‘Victorious’ was made to work extremely hard for his debut victory

Taking on Spanish fighter Alejandro Mostazo, the Jobstown super middleweight scored a points win in which he as forced to battle through an immensely tough final round.

A cagey first saw Finnegan box behind the well and settle any jitters against what was a dangerous opponent with a long backgound in mixed martial arts, K1 kickboxing, and semi-pro boxing.

Opening up in the second, Finnegan landed some heavy-looking left hooks. Mostazo was more than up for a fight, looking to trade and leading to Finnegan reverting back to the jab.

Finnegan grabbed the initiative midway through the third, hurting Mostazo badly, pinning him to the ropes and knocking the Spaniard’s head back with numerous big shots. While the bout looked to be on the verge of being waved off, Mostazo would rebound to fight back well and see out the stanza.

With Finnegan visibly tired, Mostazo came on strong and badly stunned the Dubliner before launching a two-minute onslaught which Finnegan did well to survive.

Going to the scorecard, Finnegan was deservedly awarded the bout with the referee’s tally reading 39:37.

Finnegan’s brand new professional record starts off at 1(0)-0. Alejandro Mostazo drops to 1(0)-2(0).
