Thomas Carty and Dave Allen Differ Over Possible Rematch
Thomas Carty is desperate to run it back with Dave Allen — but the English heavyweight appears to have firmly closed the door on a rematch.
The pair’s highly anticipated heavyweight clash at Croke Park ended in bizarre circumstances last Saturday, with the Dubliner falling through the ropes and out of the ring just 82 seconds into the opening round following a shot to the back of the head.
The bout was subsequently declared a no-contest, leaving both fighters without a definitive result in front of more than 80,000 fans on the night of Katie Taylor’s farewell.
For the Irish southpaw, it was a particulalry frustrating outcome as it denied him the chance to register a massive breakthrough win. Not to mention, it left him with a number of online critics he has been hitting back with all week.
With both in mind, the Celtic Warrior Gym fighter would like another go at the White Rhino.
Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, the Dublin heavyweight insisted he is ready to face Allen again wherever the fight can be made.
“Obviously, I’d love the rematch,” Carty said.
“I absolutely want the rematch. I know he’s not interested, but it’s something that I’d be really keen on.”
“Frustrated is probably the only emotion after what happened the weekend,” he said. “Absolutely frustrated, but motivated to get the rematch on.”
However, English veteranAllen’s stance could not be more different.
The Doncaster big man has repeatedly stated that he has no interest in a repeat.
Allen told Helwani that he has only a handful of fights left and wants to pursue a British heavyweight title opportunity before calling time on his career.
“There’ll be no rematch,” Allen said.
“I want to win the British title.”
“I’m interested in the British title,” he explained. “I’m interested in being in good fights with new opponents and new challenges.”
The 34-year-old has also made clear that he does not believe Carty deliberately looked for a way out of their Croke Park clash.
“I don’t believe so,” Allen said when asked about the suggestion.
“I spoke to Thomas and he told me that he didn’t. So I’m inclined to believe him as a fighter,” he adds before suggesting both fighters shouldn’t look at reacquainting.
“It’s been and gone, and it’s done and over with,” he said.
