Opponent named for Marco McCullough’s British title warm-up

An opponent has been named for Marco McCullough‘s British title warm-up bout this Friday (March 10th).

Featherweight McCullough [16(10)-3(2)] features on the big Belfast BoxNation bill at the Waterfront Hall in what will be his last fight before challenging for Ryan Walsh’s title in London on May 6th.

On Friday the Shankill scrapper will take on Nicaraguan journeyman Leonel Hernandez leonel hernandez[10(1)-19(7)-2] in a scheduled eight rounder.

Hernandez has some Irish previous, having gone six with Anto Cacace in November. In his next fight he would go the full eight with former IBF super bantamweight champion Kiko Martinez, and he was last seen being pulled out in the third round against Kid Galahad on the Eubank-Quinlan pay-per-view undercard.

The unambitious Central American is a solid, if unspectacular, opponent. Primarily though, the fight serves a purpose in keeping McCullough sharp ahead of the showdown with Walsh.

MTK’s McCullough headlined the previous Belfast BoxNation bill, stopping Luis Lugo in the fourth to win the WBO Inter-Continental title.

The card this Friday will be headlined by Commonwealth super flyweight champion Jamie Conlan against former world title challenger Yader Cardoza, and will also feature an Irish super featherweight title clash between Deco Geraghty and James Tennyson, and a BUI Celtic light welterweight fight between Tyrone McKenna and Jake Hanney. Other names on the show include Phil Sutcliffe Jr, Paddy Barnes, Con Sheehan, Steven Ward, Joe Fitzpatrick, and Lewis Crocker, as well as English fighters Troy Williamson and Kevin Satchell.
