There are six Irish boxers in action today in in two major tournaments, with three medals up for grabs.

At the European Championships in Bulgaria, three of the Irish womens’s team will each face Russian opposition in quarter final bouts with guaranteed bronze medals on the line.

Meanwhile, in Russia itself, three members of the men’s Youth team will fight in Round of 32 bouts.

Starting the day off bright and early at 10:00AM (All times are Irish time) in Ring B in St Petersburg is Limerick lightweight Paddy Donovan. The OLOL southpaw is up against Filipino Ranjo Gil Napoles.

Then, at 12:45pm, also in Ring B, Michael Nevin gets his campaign underway. The Portlaoise middleweight takes on Croat Matej Uremovic.

The women get underway at 2:00pm in Sofia, and first up is Offaly’s Gráinne Walsh. The big-punching welter looks for a maiden major medal against Saadat Abdulaeva.

Finally for the boys, at 3:00pm, is captain Brett McGinty. The Ulster welter fights Slovakian Andrej Csemez in Ring A.

Next up at the European Championships is Kerry feather Moira McElligott at 4:15pm. The St Michael’s Athy fighter faces a huge task against Natalya Samokhina.

Rounding out the day is Cork middleweight Christina Desmond at 5:30pm. The Rebelette opens her account in Bulgaria, and will look to add to the bronze won last month at the World University Championships, with a fight against Oksana Trofimova.
