Eric Donovan eased to victory tonight in Dublin.
‘Lilywhite Lightning’ quickly zapped the challenge of late replacement Stefan Nicolae at the National Stadium on the Red Corner Promotions ‘Unfinished Business’ bill.
The Romanian came in at short notice when it looked like Donovan may be forced off the bill, but the fight-saving Eastern European was no match for the former amateur star.
A quite opener saw Donovan edge his way into fight, turning up the pressure down the stretch as his started to firer off volleys of combination.
Nicolae was game, looking to throw shots, but the Athy boxer’s attention to the body was beginning to pay dividends, and a left hook to the solar plexus finally put his opponent down. In obvious pain, the grimacing Romanian beat the count, but the fight was waved. Indeed Nicolae was still in visible discomfort minutes later when the result was being read.
Donovan stretches his flawless record to 3(2)-0 following the win, while Nicolae moves to 1(0)-5(3) after his night’s work.
Next up for Donovan now is a potential headline slot on a card in his home county of Kildare, with manager Leonard Gunning looking into the possibility of bringing pro boxing to the area for the first time in over a century.
