2020 Celtic Box Cup cancelled

The 2020 Celtic Box Cup has been postponed until next year, according to Munster Boxing.

The Celtic Box Cup has been running for the last number of years and has evolved into a top international and domestic tournament with teams from all over the world competing in Waterford.

The Munster Council claimed today they have no choice but to cancel this years proposed involvement.

The Munster Council released the following statement:

On behalf of Dungarvan Boxing club I am very sorry to say that after taking all available information into account we have no choice but to cancel this years Celtic Box Cup. At the moment it looks like there will be no competitive boxing in Ireland until at least October and then there will be travel restrictions stopping teams from coming into Ireland. I know and I hope things might change before then, but alas it will be too late for us, as we have to make decisions and arrangements now. This would have been the 8th Celtic Box Cup and boxers and teams will be very disappointed, but none more so then ourselves as this has become a very successful and enjoyable event for the boxing calendar and the Town of Dungarvan. I wish to thank everyone for making this event possible each year, the I.A.B.A. for giving us permission, the Munster Council for their full support, all the Officials for travelling far and wide, the Boxers of course, Waterford City and County Council, Shanley Electrical, Dial a Chef, Dungarvan Credit Union and all our very kind sponsors. A special thanks to all our engineers who keep the show on the road, Kim who keeps the Kettle Boiled, the Ladies on the door, the boxers and cubs who clean up and sell tickets, the RING erectors, Theresa from the Sports Centre, our very good friends from Cork who work very hard by day but can organize a good sing song in the evening. Francis Keeling, Paul Kelly and Keelan Murphy from Jablink who are the brains of the outfit. I certainly hope I’m leaving no one out and hopefully we’ll all meet again next year.
