Stevie McKenna finally signs pro contract

Almost seven months on from it first being agreed, Stevie McKenna has finally signed a pro contract.

The Monaghan lightweight, one of three fighting McKenna brothers from Smithborough, has linked up with management outfit Sheer Sports after some paperwork issues were finally resolved.

McKenna joins younger sibling Aaron [6(4)-0] in the pros while eldest brother Gary remains in the vest.

The 21-year-old has been out in Los Angeles since the start of the year training alongside Aaron under South African coach Courage Tshabalala and their father Fergal and will now finally begin building a pro record.

A top underage amateur, McKenna won Commonwealth Youth gold and European Youth silver in 2015 before moving to Senior level and, in his first fight without the headguard, he claimed the 2016 Irish Elite light flyweight title.

A rapid growth spurt followed and McKenna is now a towering power-punching lightweight.

It is also being reported by the42.ie that Stevie is set to sign a promotional deal and join his younger brother on the books of U.S. giant Golden Boy.

19-year-old Aaron moved to 6-0 last week, scoring a second-round stoppage over Abel Reyes at the Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio, California. This was ‘The Silencer’s’ first scheduled six-rounder.

A debut date for Stevie, hopefully before the end of 2018, will be announced shortly.

McKenna said that he is “looking forward to the exciting journey ahead.”
