Smith edged out in Baku after slug fest

Ceire Smith today made her exit from the inaugural European Games by the narrowest of margins.

Her quarter final bout with Russia’s European Championships silver medalist, Saian Sagataeva, ended in a split decision win for the Russian (39-37 x2, 37-39).

The 22 year old Cavan flyweight therefore has missed out on a first major international medal.

However such a performance against one of the World’s best boxers shows that Smith belongs at World level and will win medals in the future.

After the disappointment of Baku, Smith now must focus on the Elite Nationals this Winter and securing Olympic qualification at the World Championships next year.
