Skys the limit for Katie Taylor

Katie Taylor has been added to the Sky Sports Scholarship  program.

The sponsorship scheme provides funding and competition needs for athletes and Taylor – who claimed her fifth European senior title at the European Women Boxing Championships last month – is among eleven individuals to benefit from the programme.

Funding for the 25-year-old will help financially with travel, coaching, nutrition and medical treatment as well as enabling her to attend extra training camps with her coach and father.

Taylor said: “It allows me to go away to training camps with my dad, who’s also my coach as well. I’m allowed to be up against these top, top boxers as well and that can push me all the way.

“I’m getting the best medical treatment as well with the funding and it’s just great to have the help and support of this scholarship in the next few years really. It’s been a blessing really for me.”

The reigning world and EU lightweight champion thinks the scheme will improve the already increasing rise of women’s boxing throughout the country.

Taylor added: “It’s amazing the girls that are boxing in the country. Even in our own boxing club there are nearly more girls than there are boys and some of the young girls coming up are absolutely brilliant. They’re beating the boys as well.

“At a young age, 10 and 11, there’s half girls and half boys, it’s just brilliant to see. The talent in the country is amazing at the moment, which is brilliant for women’s boxing.”
