This month’s award goes to Newry middleweight Kane Tucker.
The Holy Trinity fighter claimed a sensational silver at the Commonwealth Youth Games in the Bahamas.
A first year Youth in one of the more physical classes, Tucker stormed to silver in the Caribbean, taking on and beating older top-level boxers.
The 17 year old guaranteed bronze in his first fight, winning perhaps the Fight of the Tournament against Scotland’s Ryan Reekie on a 4-1 split.
Tucker then upgraded to silver with a dominant win over 6’6″ Canadian Satwinder Thind.
His odyssey came to an end in the final, where he was edged out on a 4-1 split following another war with England’s Aaron Bowen.
Commonwealth commitments meant Tucker was not in the running to got to the 2017 European Youths in Turkey this October, and he will now take a break and gear up for 2018.
Tucker takes this month’s prize after just edging Enniskerry’s Daina Moorehouse in the votes. The Bray boxer claimed European Junior gold in Bulgaria, dominating Ukrainian, Russian, and English opponents in fights where she did not lose a single round.
Third place went to the Connacht Boys – Paddy Donovan, Paddy Sweeney, and Eoghan Lavin – who all claimed silver at the European Schoolboys Championships.
