Paul Hyland Jr ready to take Gallovich gamble with title eliminator on the cards
Carl Frampton fought in the betting capital of the world last weekend, facing Léo Santa Cruz at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
This week however, Belfast’s Paul Hyland Jr [13(4)-0] admits he is taking a gamble himself.
The Gleann lightweight headlines the first Irish card of the year on Saturday night, topping the bill at the Europa Hotel on the MHD Promotions ‘Inquisition’ dinner show.
His opponent here, secured on short notice, will be Giovanni Gallovich [8(1)-0].
The fight will Hylo’s first ten rounder, and his opposition comes in to the fight as an unknown quantity. While none of his wins, so far, have come against notable opposition, the unbeaten Hungarian can not be underestimated, especially considering the complete lack of footage available.
Hyland told Irish-Boxing.com that “because I don’t know much about him, it’s a wee bit of a gamble.”
“Mark said to me that it’s a gamble, but this guy has got a load of [Boxrec] ranking points.”
In terms of what he does know about the Magyar, Hyland described how “he is undefeated, he’ll be trying my 0 because it would be great boost on his record.”
“He’s recently turned pro, he’s only a pro two months, so I’ll have the experience over him. But, as Mark was saying to me, he’s going to be tough. He’s a small wee stocky thing and he’ll come for a fight, but it’s a ten-rounder so I’m going to pace myself and just try and outbox him.”
“I’m going to have the reach on him and maybe I’ll step it up and take him out late. More or less just control the whole fight. He’s going to come at me looking to throw big shots, but I’ll hurt him with straight shots as he’s coming in.”
“It’s going to be a good scrap.”
The fight will be 26 year old Hyland’s first under the British Boxing Board of Control having moved in the aftermath of the controversy that surrounded a proposed Irish title fight with Gearoid Clancy.
The Ulsterman now has his eyes on the British title, something he is lead to believe can happen before the end of 2017. Outlining his plans, Hyland explained how “I swapped over and the British Board welcomed me with open arms, they’re more that happy to have me on board. They were saying hopefully we’ll get an eliminator soon. Cardle’s the champion but there are a few people looking for it.”
“Cardle, I saw him say on his Twitter saying that he has one more defence and then he wins the belt outright. I would love to be that defence but I don’t think he’d take it.”
“So if he vacates, and it looks likely because I hear he’s aiming for the European title, then it will be an eliminator and maybe another eliminator. Hopefully some time at the end of the year we’ll get a shot at the British title.”
“But I don’t want to be looking past this fight.”
