He has had to do it the hard way, but it’s not a hard luck story according to Stephen Ormond.

Indeed, ‘The Rock’ sees something rewarding about his long and rocky road toward the top, and claims that when he eventually wins a World title, the fact that he has paid his dues and earned it will make it all the more special.

There has always been a feeling the Clondalkin puncher hasn’t been given the opportunities his talent has deserved. Then, when the former WBO European lightweight champ did get the chance to fight Terry Flanagan in a WBO World title eliminator, he suffered personal tragedy days before the fight, wasn’t himself, and ended up being disqualified in the ninth round for persistent headbutts.

However, Ormond is now back on the World title trail and has a World title in his sights. Indeed, the Celtic Warrior Gym fighter could be just two wins away from buckling a prestigious strap around the waist.

Before a possible tilt at a major belt, Ormond has to first overcome an eliminator, but the fighter, who feels Britain’s lightweight World champs are avoiding him, is more than happy to earn his shot.

“I am delighted. This is the way I want to do it earn my shot the old school way. Doing it the hard way will make winning it all the better and when I win it it will be harder to take it off me,” Ormond told Irish-boxing.com before revealing all the details he could about the clash.

“In early August I fight in an eliminator. It has been confirmed we are just waiting on their side to announce it. I am training for it the last month. The date and venue have changed a bit, but it’s going to happen that is all that matters. This is the big one now. I am focused on this fight.”
