McGregor defeater beats Katie Taylor to BBC World Sport Star award

Khabib Nurmagomedov has beaten Katie Taylor to be named the BBC’s World Sport Star of the Year for 2020.

The undisputed lightweight champion of the world was nominated for the award, but lost out to Conor McGregor’s defeater, who announced his retirement from MMA earlier the year.

The Irish sensation enjoyed a successful year despite the fact the pandemic forced the postponement of a ‘mega fight’ with Amanda Serrano.

The Bray native defeated Delfine Persoon in a highly entertaining encouther in August, before displaying her class against mandatory challenger Miriam Gutierrez at the tail end of the year.

The wins saw the groundbreaking star confirmed Pound for Pound#1 and was named Boxing Writers Association of America Female Fighter of the Year.

However, the unique talent missed out on the BBC Award.

Nurmagomedov won the BBC website vote to beat Taylor basketballer LeBron James, golfer Dustin Johnson, footballer Wendie Renard and pole-vaulter Armand Duplantis to the gong.

Taylor hopes to return as early as February or March of next year. The list of potential opponents has grown over the past 12 months, but who is next in line remains to be seen.
