Irish Garden Party – Golden Gloves delight for Cunningham

Sarah Cunningham enjoyed a Madison Square Garden party on Thursday night.

The Roscommon native claimed a famous prize at the famous venue becoming the latest Irish boxer Golden Gloves champion at the Mecca of Boxing.

The late to the game fighter won the Ring Masters [formerly Golden Gloves] featherweight title after an impressive display in New York.

The Brooklyn resident got over the line at the second time of asking going one step further than her lightweight final defeat last year.

Speaking to Irish-boxing.com before the final, Cunningham, who collected the famous accolade just five years after she took up the sport, revealed just how much victory would mean and how much effort she had put in to try and secure it.

“This would mean everything to me- I wake up at 430am to get 2-3hrs of training in before a demanding day of work. I am devoted to this sport so a victory would solidify all of that.”

Speaking online post the win the second ever Irish born woman to win the tournament said.

“I am so proud of last night performance, we trained so hard for this and I pushed myself and the team under the toughest circumstances and we came out on top!”

There was also Ring Masters success for Sean O’Bradaigh.

The son of a Dub won the middleweight title after another impressive performance in the final.
