Hyland marches on

7 May 2011 – Jonny Stapleton

Patrick Hyland moved a step closer to a European title tilt with a points victory over Daniel Kodjo Sassou in London last Saturday night.

Hyland won the six round contest by referees score of 58-56 and pushed his unbeaten record to 22 wins without defeat. Having shared the ring with the likes of Scott Quigg and defeating Rhys Roberts the tough Kodjo Sassou was always going to ask questions of the Irish featherweight. But the Tallaght native, who was grateful to end a slight period of inactivity with six solid rounds, answered all the boxing queries his opponent asked and now having fought on yet another European title under card The Punisher wants a continental challenge of his own.

The middle of three champion brothers, who will fight next on a card promoted by his father in June, talked about his willingness to challenge Sofiane Takoucht and the reigning champs lack of desire to fight him prior to the bout and talked about progressing to the next level after Saturdays win. And if he continues to string impressive performances like last Saturday night the Frenchman will have no choice but to face the heavy handed featherweight before the year is out.
