GOLD: Amazing Amy Broadhurst wins final at European Under-22 Championships

Amy Broadhurst claimed a glorious second gold this morning at the European Under-22 Championships in Vladikavkaz.

Celebrating both her 22nd birthday and St Patrick’s Day, Broadhurst beat Italian Rebecca Nicoli in Russia on a 4-1 split-decision to top the podium.

A bout which pitted the reigning champions at lightweight and light welter against each other, Broadhurst showed her skill to edge her larger and physically strong opponent.

The Louth southpaw landed smart straight shots in the opening two rounds before holding off a third round push from Nicoli to secure the win and her second gold medal at this level.

Four of the cards read 29-28 in her favour against a 30-27 for the Italian.

Broadhurst was overjoyed at the final result and would take to the podium soon after, with Amhrán na bhFiann playing out over the tannoy on our national holiday

The Muirhevnamor fighter’s medal tally now reads: European Junior gold, European Youth gold, European Union Youth gold, European Youth silver, and a pair of European Under-22 golds.
