European Schoolboys Championships – Ireland take home 4 Silver Medals

By Bernard O’Neill – IABA Press Officer

Stephen Cairns. Brandon McCarthy, Ethan McGuckin and Michael McDonald had to settle for silver at the European Schoolboy Championships in Anapa, Russia today.

The Irish quartet lost out in their finals to Russia’s Nikita Robov, Mukhammed Vakhaev and Mansur Nikerkhoev and Yuri Miadakov of the Ukraine.

Cairns and McCarthy were adjudged to have been beaten on unanimous decisions and McGuckin was unlucky to be edged out on a split to Miadakov.

McDonald, probably trying to take it out of the hands of the judges – Russia won 14 gold medals today…. – lost on a first round TKO after taking two standing counts, although his opponent also took some heavy shots in the same frame.

Francis Quinn won bronze in Anapa to take Ireland’s medal haul to five in Russia. The 18-strong squad also finished in 4th spot in the rankings table at the 24-nation tournament.

Irish team manager Paddy Gallagher hailed the performances of the Irish team in Russia and also praised the coaching staff of Tom Murray, Egor Khmil and Eoin Pluck.

Team Ireland are due to arrive home from Russia via Dublin Airport (Terminal 1) at 9.15pm on Monday evening, November 9th. Flight AF1016 from Charles De Gaulle Airport.
