Edward Donovan: Ben Whittaker has me in Gear for Carr
Edward Donovan says he is in top gear going into his Peter Carr clash.
The Limerick man believes the quality of his preparation will make the difference when he meets the Dubliner at the National Stadium on Saturday.
The Dominator faces the Devil in an anticipated domestic bout on JB Promotions Judgement Day card at the South Circular Road.Â
The younger brother of former world title challenger Paddy Donovan claims he hasn’t cut corners in training, indeed quite the opposite.
The former underage amateur standout says he spent camp deliberately seeking out difficult challenges rather than comfortable rounds, with Ben Whittaker among the fighters he has sparred.
“I always like to challenge myself,” Donovan when speaking to Irish-boxing.com.
“I’m not one of them guys who just takes the handy spar where I look good. I get in, I mix it with the best.”
For the Munster battler, that approach is about making sure his preparation reflects the intensity he expects to encounter on fight night.
“I put on as good a spar as I can in a fight and I bring it to the ring,” he adds.
The fighter has also been working alongside his brother Paddy Donovan, who is trained by Andy Lee, creating a camp environment he believes has pushed him to another level.
And after putting himself through a demanding preparation, Donovan is confident the work will show when he steps between the ropes.
“Once I know and I prepare to the best of my ability, I know I can get any job done. I have prepared to the best of my ability and I know Saturday I can get the job done.”
While he is confident of victory, the older brother of underage Irish international Martin Donovan and cousin to Jim Donovan does respect the challenge recent Irish title challenger Carr.
“Peter Carr is a good, tough fighter and he brings a good fight to anybody. No matter who he fights, Peter Carr will be in a fight and he is there to fight. I just think I have too much class and experience for him.”
After spending 18 months away from boxing, Donovan is now looking to show what the time away — and the work since his return — has produced.
He insists the lay-off was simply a decision to step away from the sport and reset, rather than being caused by injury or medical issues.
Now his attention is firmly on Saturday night and delivering the performance he believes his preparation deserves.
“What can you expect on Saturday night? Me getting the job done in fashion against Peter Carr.”
