1970: Heavyweight John McKinty defeated Englishman Les Stevens by a split decision to reach the final of the Commonwealth Games. In quarter finals McKinty had outpointed Nigerian Ngozika Ekwelum. In the decider McKinty fell to Ugandan Benson Masanda

1955: Dundalk’s Cliff Garvey outpointed Buncrana puncher Joe Quinn to win the Irish middleweight title. The win at the Chapelizod Stadium was also revenge for the Louth boxer who had been defeated over eight by Quinn two years previously.
