James McGivern warns Commonwealth field – “I’m the biggest threat there is”
He was the stand out fighter on display in the Ulster Elite Senior Championships and James McGivern believes he will be the best at his weight when he steps up to Commonwealth level.
The stylish lightweight announced himself on the senior scene when he took the Ulster Elite title and the Best Boxer award following a classy win over Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Sean Duffy in the finals of the most recent provincial championships last November.
The St Georgeās youngster, who turned 20 at the weekend, is now planning on registering a similar impact when he trades leather for Commonwealth medals in Australia in April.
McGivern suggests he has no one to fear at the weight and indicates he should be deemed a big 60kg threat himself.
“I’m sure thereās going to be a bunch of talented boxers at the weight but at 60kg, in my head at least, Iām the biggest threat there is,” McGivern told Irish-Boxing.com before stating he was going all out for gold.
“Every time I compete thatās the only thing on my mind, itās gold medals or nothing.”
The fighter, who confirmed he won’t enter the National Elite Championships scheduled for February, is fresh to the major Senior international tournaments and is excited about competing at the Gold Coast come April.
“Iām over the moon. I canāt wait to get over there and do what Iām best at,” he said before reflecting on his selection.
“You never know it was give or take for a while. There are a lot of talented boxers at the weight but after the Ulsterās I knew I should be in the team.”
While Tokyo 2020 is still a long way off, McGivern views his trip Down Under as another step on the way.
The Commonwealth Youth gold and European Youth silver medalist noted how “it’s a major games and itās only going to push me on to bigger and better things like the Olympics. The Olympics has been my goal from I was a boy.”
