‘Relief and Redemption’ – Revenge Complete for Karl Sheridan

Karl Sheridan felt both relieved and redeemed after a successful revenge mission in the National Stadium last Saturday night.

The Dubliner avenged a surprise early defeat to Jorge Luis Heurta Balleza by defeating the Mexican on the Judgement Day card at the National Stadium.

Now having gone back, he feels he can move forward with his career.

The popular entertainer says he has closed the chapter on a frustrating rivalry with the shutout 40-36 win.

“I just feel relieved and redeemed,” Sheridan said afterwards. “I feel better than I have been for the past few months,” he added, suggesting the initial defeat weighed heavily.

Sheridan and his team felt he was very unlucky not to win the original encounter and thus were confident he had enough about him to win a rematch. However, the fighter with a unique and popular ringwalk went away and made improvements just to be sure.

He was also aware he couldn’t react to the Mexican’s pantomime villain approach.

“I knew I had to be more clinical. These guys are just all they know is throwing big shots over the top and dragging you down into a little war.

“My dad said to me after the first round that it was just all mind games. He was doing that to get me into a war because he wasn’t having any success the other way,” Sheridan said. “I was boxing and he wasn’t landing much,” he continued before suggesting he had prepared to win without over-engaging.

“Me and me dad have just been practising off the jab, jab, counter, backhand.

“Everything off the jab. In-and-out footwork, head movement. Worked on loads day in, day out. It paid off.”

Now, with the blemish in his past amended, the JB Promotions man wants to look forward.

He wants the longer rounds and says sparring with the McCormack brothers in Liverpool shows he is ready for bigger test.

“Now that this fight is out of the way it’s onto a new chapter now.

“I only get going towards the fourth round. I’m looking forward now to six rounds and eight-rounders. That’s when I’ll thrive.

“I’ve been sparring these boys and mixing with them, having great spars with them. I know that I’m at that level. It’s only a matter of time now before I get there.”
