Wood Makes Strange Lewis Hamilton Comparison as he hits out at Conlan Rematch Doubters

Leigh Wood [26(16)-2(1)] believes he would be sitting comfortably in the driving seat if he was to agree to a rematch with Michael Conlan [17(8)-01(1)] and hit out at anyone that suggests otherwise.

The WBA regular world champion suggests he should be deemed favourite going into any return and made a Formula 1 comparison to explain why.

The Ben Davidson trained puncher was dropped heavy by one of Ireland’s greatest ever amateurs in the first round of their Nottingham hosted March encouther. The Belfast star proceeded to outbox the title holder for the majority of the fight before Wood rescued victory from the jaws of defeat with a sensational last-round knockout.

Considering Conlan was in the ascendancy for the majority of the fight, many argue minor alterations would win him any return – and considering his ring IQ and the team he has around him making tactical tweaks shouldn’t prove an issue.

The Champion doesn’t see it like that, cryptically hinting he should get more praise for coming from behind to win the Fight of the Year contender.

And in a bid to explain as much he compared himself to Lewis Hamilton.

Team Wood where offered the chance to rematch but elected against an immediate re-run and the Matchroom fighter now looks likely to share the ring with ‘super’ champ Leo Santa Cruz next.

Conlan put some distance between himself and the Wood loss last week when he beat Miguel Marriaga on top of a stacked Belfast bill.
