Weekend Round-Up: Michael Devine destroys Day while Ward wins step-up

It was a hugely successful weekend for Irish boxers around the World, with plenty of wins in important fights.

In Australia Darragh Foley defended his WBA Oceania light welterweight title, while Jono Carroll won his slight step up in Scotland with Stephen Ormond exerting revenge over Zoltan Szabo on the same card.

In addition there was a big win last night for Luton-Wexford lightweight Michael Devine [15(5)-5(2)-1] in London. Chunky became a two-weight BBBoC Southern Area champion with a stunning second round knockout of former gym-mate Ben Day.

Meanwhile, at the Hilton Hotel in Coventy, there was an impressive second victory for Steven Ward. The Ulster light heavyweight took a step-up to face strong Lithuanian journeyman Remigijus Ziausys, knocking the Baltic boxer down in the third en-route to a 40:35 points win. Physically bigger, Ziausys has fought the likes of British heavyweights Dillian Whyte and Dereck Chisora, and recently went six with Irish cruiserweight Ian Tims.

Bangor journeyman Casey Blair went back to grindstone at the Guild Hall in Southampton, going four with prospect MH Legg.

Finally, on Friday night in Canada, lightweight Cam O’Connell moved to 14(9)-0-1 with an eight-round points (79-73 x2, 78-74) win over dangerous Mexican knockout artist Juan Bedolla Orozco.
