Top 10 opponent confirmed for James Tennyson’s world title eliminator

Matchroom have today confirmed an opponent for James Tennyson‘s WBA world title Eliminator.

‘The Assassin’ will face Josh O’Reilly [16(6)-0] on the undercard of Billy Joe Saunders’ WBO Super-Middleweight World Title defence against Martin Murray at The SSE Arena, Wembley on Friday December 4, shown live on Sky Sports and DAZN.

Tennyson [27(23)-3(3)] continued his destructive form last time out in August at Matchroom Fight Camp as he claimed the vacant British lightweight title with a powerful sixth round stoppage win over brave Welshman Gavin Gwynne.

It was believed the former super featherweight world title challenger would chase down a European title shot and attempt to become Ireland’s first ever two weight EBU champion.

However, the path the blue belt became somewhat complicated when the EBU ordered Edis Tatli and Gianluca Ceglia fight for the vacant strap by January.

The Matchroom lightweight, billed as one the biggest pound for pound punchers in world boxing by Eddie Hearn, will now look to enhance his world ranking and push closer to a title currently held by Vasyl Lomachenko defeater Teofimo Lopez.

The fact the word ‘final’ doesn’t proceed eliminator in this case means the entertaining destructive puncher won’t earn mandatory status with a win next month, but it does see him continue his progression.

O’Reilly is undefeated in 16 fights since turning professional in July 2014, and the 29-year-old Canadian holds the North American Boxing Association Lightweight Title and a top ten ranking with the WBA.
