“Things have been talked about” – Feargal McCrory targeting contract ahead of second Sky showing
He impressed Eddie Hearn with his destruction of Paul Holt during the Summer and now Feargal McCrory [6(3)-0] wants to show that it was not a one-off and earn himself a promotional contract.
The well-supported Coalisland fighter features on the Ryan Burnett v Zhanat Zhakiyanov undercard this weekend and McCrory believes that it could be a life-changing fight.
The Tyrone super featherweight grabbed the attention of Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn with his second round stoppage of Holt and now faces Welsh prospect Callum Busuttil at the weekend
25 year old McCrory, who will be bringing his biggest ever crowd to the fight, is hopeful that a big win could lead to an offer from Matchroom and he told irish-Boxing.com that “there is a lot of pressure in this fight – a lot of pressure to perform, to deliver.”
“We genuinely believe we’ll get a contract out of this. Things have been talked about.”
“if it’s right, if it suits, yeah we’ll go.”
While he was dominant against Holt, McCrory does not want to rest on his laurels, and the John Breen and Eamonn Magee-trained fighter is keen to improve.
‘Fearless Feargal’ outlined how “I’m my own biggest critic. Yes it was a great performance and yes it was the best performance of my career – but if you look back and admire what you’ve done, you’ll get lazy, you’ll get complacent.”
“I’m never happy, maybe that’s a good thing, maybe it’s a bad thing, but that’s the way it is.”
“I believe it’ll be another career-best performance.”
McCrory had been hoping that this career-best performance would be coming against British title challenger Troy James, but this proposed fight fell through.
He is now faced with 21 year old Busuttil, a hungry prospect with a style and ambition similar to himself.
While the preparations in the gym have gone well, it has not been an ideal build-up for McCrory who admitted that “It’s been tough in terms of preparing for a particular kind of opponent, but nevertheless we’ve trained hard, we’ve worked hard, and we’ve done the weight right as always.”
“I’m just glad that they’ve got someone confirmed, it’s happening, and now we can focus on that opponent, get our gameplan in place, and execute it.”
On Busuttil, McCrory described how “he’s very dangerous, he has a lot of ambition, is a former Welsh amateur champion, and he’ll come to the ring with a great amount of pride.”
“He’ll be coming to take what I have. I’ll obviously be a big step-up for him, he has nothing to lose, but we’re prepared, Eamonn and John will work him out in the first 30 seconds and I’ll work him out myself too.
It’s a potentially major fight in the young boxers career, and he acknowledged the support he has behind him.
“I don’t just want to impress Eddie Hearn,” noted McCrory. “I want to impress the people that have come to support me, more than anything. They’re the people, and John and Eamonn, who have taken me to where I am today.”
” – but if he likes what he sees, he likes what he sees.”
