Katie Taylor followed in the footsteps of fighters like Mike McCallum, Winky Wright, Vitali Klitschko, Timothy Bradley, Jorge Linares, and Errol Spence by winning the British Boxing Board of Control’s 2018 Overseas Boxer of the Year award.
The British Board honoured the unified world champion at their prestigious award ceremony, which took place on Friday at the Royal Lancaster London Hotel, sponsored by Everlast, in association with Boxing News.
The Bray native saw off opposition from WBO light welterweight world champion Maurice Hooker, former WBC light welterweight champ Viktor Postol and IBF bantamweight world title hodler Emmanuel Rodriguez to claim the award.
The award comes following a period in which Taylor fought in four world title fights – three of which were in Britain – picking up the IBF and WBA lightweight titles.
The Wicklow 31-year-old returns to the ring in Boston on October 20th when she faces former WBO featherweight champion Cindy Serrano at the TD Garden on a bill which also features Niall Kennedy a world title fight for Belfast super featherweight James Tennyson versus IBF champ Tevin Farmer.
More Belfast boxers, Carl Frampton and Ryan Burnett, were also nominated for awards at the swanky gala last week, but didn’t pick up the gongs.
‘The Jackal’s’ clash with Nonito Donaire back in April was a Fight of the Year nominee, but the award went to Tommy Langford and Jason Welborn for their first British middleweight title fight.
Burnett, alongside Anthony Joshua and others, was a Boxer of the Year Nominee following a year in which he unified world titles but the award controversially went to Scot Josh Taylor – who he shares a WBSS card with on November 3rd.
Former Irish light middleweight champ Jamie Moore, who coaches Steven Ward, Conrad Cummings and Frampton, collected the Trainer of the Year Award beating the likes of David Coldwell, Joe Gallagher, Robert McCracken, Sean O’Hagen, and Ireland’s Shane McGuigan.
Honoured and privileged to follow in the footsteps of some of these great fighters! https://t.co/5uzCCihyU4
