World Championship Wins for Donoghue and Byrne
Team Ireland had a 100% win record at the World Boxing Championships in Budva on Tuesday.
Both Jason Donoghue and Kayleigh Byrne got off the mark at the major international tournament.
Donoghue has made a winning start on his World-level debut.
The Olmpic Mulingar boxer boxed his 65kg Last 32 contest against Ukraine’s Rostyslav Horodynsky, and came away with the 3-0 win, scored 28:28; 29:27; 28:27; 28:28; 29: 27.
The younger brother of John Donoghue is back in action in Thursday’s Afternoon Session, boxing for a quarter-finals berth against Moldova’s Catalin Mustea.
Kayleigh Byrne has announced herself on the World stage – winning her debut bout by RSC.
Three-time European medalist boxed her 51kg Last 32 contest against Poland’s Patricia Petriman, and forced three standing counts in the second round, prompting the stoppage.
The Wexford native will box for a place in the quarter-finals on Thursday, when she’ll meet Taipei’s Shi-Chun Chou.
