Sinky Says

01 October 2009 – By Neil Sinclair

I thought I was fighting on October 9, but it has been put back four weeks. Ill ease off a little in training for a few weeks, but Ill continue to come in and spar with Stephen Haughian, who is fighting on September 26 on the Dublin bill.

When a fight is postponed it is the whole bill that suffers. People just focus on the top of the bill; they forget the other fighters who have been preparing. Martin is lucky that he is so popular and that there is a big crowd coming to see him because quite often a challenger can lose their chance by getting injured. But it was a great fight the first time and I think it will be a great fight the second time as well.

I was all set for a non-title eight-rounder but it could be an inter-continental title fight now. I found that out in the last few days. That would be great if that happened. It adds more spice for me. It gives me a bit extra fire in the belly.

John Joe Nevin did brilliantly to pick up a bronze at the World Championships. He is one of only a handful of Irish boxers to have achieved that so he should feel very proud of himself. One of my good friends, Stephen Kirk did it as well in 1997. It was very unfortunate how Stephens career was ended on medical grounds but I always remind him that the world medal is something very few boxers will ever get. It is much harder than the Olympics so anyone with a world medal has done incredibly well.

Another man with a world bronze is James Moore, who I have been linked with fighting. It fell through but. in my eyes. it is still very much an option. I saw him winning his medal in the Odyssey in 2001 which is ironic because it would have been the scene of our fight. He has got a USBA title fight, which is a great chance for him, so I hope he can do it. St Patricks Day won’t be long coming around so that is a fight I think would be popular then.
