Amateur Latest O’Neill Progresses Sheehan and McDonagh out

JUNE 19 IABA Press Release

Irish team captain Darren O’Neill progressed to the last-16 of the European Senior Championships in Ankara, Turkey today.

But there was disappointment for Michael McDonagh and Con Sheehan following reversals to the Ukraine and Russia.

McDonagh lost 16-6 to Valodymyr Matvichuk and Abdulkhamid Nurmagomedov had  three points to spare (22-19) over Sheehan in a thrilling heavyweight contest.

Kilkenny southpaw O’Neill, meantime, beat Denis Radovan 16-9 – his second win over the German middleweight in the last two months.

Earlier today, Willie McLaughlin and Michael Conlon booked their places into the quarter-finals with wins over Croatia and England.

Donegal welterweight McLaughlin beat Borna Katalinic 20-14 and Belfast flyweight Conlon produces a storming final round to beat Beijing Olympian and 2010 European silver medalist Khalid Yafai of
England 19-10.

Willie McLaughlin – with his second victory in 24-hours – made it seven wins from seven for Ireland at the European Championships with a 20-14 decision over Croatian welterweight Borna Katalinic in Turkey this afternoon.

The Illies Golden Gloves Donegal club-man will now meet Zaal Kvachatadze of Georgia in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.

Earlier, Belfast flyweight Michael Conlon produced a stunning final round to beat 2006 AIBA World Cadet champion Khalid Yafai of England 19-10.

Conlon shared the first round 3-3 with the 2008 Olympian and 2010 European silver medalist before shading the second frame 6-5.

However, the St John Bosco BC ace ran away with the third and final round to set up a quarter-final with Italy’s Vincenzo Picardi on Tuesday. Tuesday’s last eight clash will be Conlon’s 8th senior fight and a win will guarantee him at least bronze.

McLaughlin will also be guaranteed bronze if he records his third victory on the trot on Tuesday.

Michael McDonagh, Darren O’Neill and Con Sheehan will be between the ropes later this afternoon and evening.
