Nolan narrowly misses out on medal

There was disappointment today for Adam Nolan who lost his welterweight quarter final in Baku at the European Games.

Fighting 2012 World Youth Championships bronze medalist, Josh Kelly, Nolan was edged out on a split decision.

The Englishman began the first fast but Nolan gradually found his rhythm. The judges were split but Kelly outworked the Wexford southpaw in the second leaving him up on two scorecards heading into the last.

Needing a stoppage, Nolan threw all he had at Kelly, who suffered a nasty cut, and the Garda won the final stanza but it was not enough.

Nolan’s search for a medal at a major championships continues and the 2012 Olympian will now calibrate his focus to the upcoming European Championships.
