Mick Conlan scores big stoppage in Arizona

Mick Conlan claimed pro win number four tonight in Arizona with a big stoppage.

The Belfast featherweight was in action at the Tucson Convention Centre on a massive Top Rank card headlined by a world title double header – and scored a massive knockout in the second round.

Oscar Valdez and Gilberto Ramirez defend their WBO world titles against Genesis Servania and Jessie Hart respectively, while Conlan took on Montana’s Kenny Guzman in a six-round chief support

The Falls Road 25 year old began patiently, switch-hitting and going to the body well, seemingly hurting Guzman in the closing seconds of the opening stanza.

Guzman certainly was Conlan’s most aggressive opponent to date, but the American was stung again to the body by the LA-based Irishman in the second before a pair of right hooks shook him right to his boots.

Right as the second round was coming to an end Conlan scored the statement stoppage he had been looking for over the last few months with a big right hand leaving Guzman sprawled out. The Kalamazoo fighter rose unsteadily but the bout was waved off to give Conlan the win.

A fourth straight stoppage, Conlan improves to 4(4)-0. The game but outclassed Guzman drops to 3(1)-1(1).

Next up for Conlan most likely looks to be a spot on the Vasyl Lomachenko v Guillermo Rigondeaux undercard at The Theater at Madison Square Garden, the scene of his unprecedented pro debut, in New York on Saturday December 9th.
