Ireland defeated by Poland in Elite Senior International

A strong Ireland team was defeated tonight in a top quality international with Poland.

The visitors were unlucky on some of the scorecards, as is to be almost expected in such events, and lost out 6-4 on the night.

Ireland lost their first three bouts, with Darryl Moran, Tommy McCarthy, and Tommy Casey all falling before Belfast lightweight Gerard Matthews steadied the ship with a great win over Adrian Kowal.

Wayne Kelly was then unlucky to be stopped in the third round after a clash of heads left him with a nasty gash over his eye.

Captain Dean Wash grabbed a great win over Kamil Holka, while there were dubious defeats for John Joyce and Tony Browne.

Making his Elite Senior debut for Ireland, former underage medal machine Michael Nevin also posted a win, while Elite super heavyweight champion Martin Keenan rounded off the show with a sensational second round knockout of Aleksander Stawirej.
