World Champ Kelly Harrington claims European Boxer of the Year Award

The awards, honours, and accolades just keep coming for Kelly Harrington.

Having won gold at the Women’s World Elite Championships in New Dehli – and bronze at the European Elite Championships – the Dubliner has been named the EUBC Female Fighter of the Year for 2018.

Harrington picked up the award yesterday in the Netherlands at a gala in Rotterdam.

It’s the latest in a string of awards for the inner-city Dub who was also named as the Irish Times/Sport Ireland Sportswoman of the Year alongside being congratulated by President Michael D Higgins and having a homecoming reception with Lord Mayor Nial Ring.

In addition, Harrington was also nominated for RTÉ Sportsperson of the Year but last night saw her claim her first international award.

Harrington was in Rotterdam to collect the award with St Mary’s Dublin BC coach Noel Burke and managed to even get some training in before the ceremony.

She now goes into the National Elite Championships as World Champion, World #1 and Best European female fighter of 2018.

The men’s award went to Frenchman Sofiane Oumiha who won lightweight gold at the European Union Championships in Valladolid, Spain.

Best Coach went to England’s Mick Driscoll and Finland’s Maart Teuronen. Wexford’s Eddie Bolger, who now coaches the German national team, was also nominated for the trainer gong.
