Jay Byrne to face another Olympian on Sky Sports card

Dublin welterweight Jay Byrne [5(1)-2(0)] has secured himself a fight with yet another top Matchroom prospect, his third such fight of 2017.

It was confirmed this afternoon that Byrne will fight Liverpool light middleweight Anthony Fowler [2(2)-0] on a big Sky Sports show in the city at the Echo Arena on Saturday September 30th.

Earlier this year Byrne, who only turned pro last Summer, went the full six rounds with middleweight Felix Cash and Rio Olympian Josh Kelly, impressing onlookers with his gutsy and game performances.

‘The Negotiator’ was due to face the 26 year old on the JDNXTGEN show in Newcastle last month, however was forced to pull out with a hand injury.

In Fowler he faces a second Rio Olympian. The English fighter was dropped and eliminated in his opening bout at the Games last Summer by Kazakh Zhanibek Alimkhanuly. During an impressive amteur career the Scouser claimed Commonwealth gold and World Championships bronze as well as participating in the World Series of Boxing.

Since turning pro Fowler, cousin of Liverpool legend Robbie, has racked up stoppage wins over Nikoloz Gvajava and Arturs Geikins.

Following his two previous defeats to Matchroom fighters Byrne bounced back with a four-round points win over Poland’s Daniel Przewieslik in Dublin.

The fight in just over ten weeks time will take place over six rounds.

The bill in Liverpool also features the following match-ups: Paul Butler v Stuart Hall, Tom Farrell v Ohara Davies, Rocky Fielding v David Brophy, and Sean Dodd v Tom Stalker.
