Jamie Conlan wins battle of the Mexicans to claim title

Jamie Conlan won the battle of the Mexicans and lifted aloft the WBO Intercontinental super flyweight title in weather anything but Mexican at the Titanic slipways.

The Belfast known as the Mexican beat Mexican Jose Estrella to extend his unbeaten record, add another title to his collection and increase his World title hopes.

Conlan claimed a 97-93, 97-93, 99-92 10 round points win, staring against a man know as ‘Hollywood’.

Like most of his compatriots Estrella came forward from the first bell. He tried to pressure the Belfast flyweight but Conlan slipped and and landed over rights on enough occasions to win the rounds.

Just when it looked like Conlan was about to up it a gear, however the away fighter enjoyed his best round. He was wild but had some success in the fifth and seemed spurred on by the sight of blood dripping down Conlan’s cheek after a clash of heads opened up a cut over the Breens Gym fighters eye.

Conlan held his ground more in the sixth and after doubling up the jab began to find a home a right hand, thus reestablishing his dominance. His game foe continued to come forward in search of work, but Conlan’s skill set meant he finished the fight on top.

The Mexican exuberance was punished with some beautifully time Conlan right hands, but the ‘Hollywood” wasn’t for folding and Conlan registered a significant career win via the judges score cards.
