Ireland name squad for Euro Youth Championship
IABA Press Release
The Irish Amateur Boxing Association have named a ten-strong squad for the eagerly anticipated 2011 European Youth Championships.
A record breaking 38 nations have registered to compete in the tournament which begins next Monday at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin.
The IABA hosted Championships will feature some of the best underage boxers in the world and give a good indication of the European talent coming through for the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
Ireland have named a formidable looking squad which includes Michael McDonagh and his St Mary’s BC (Dublin) team-mate George Bates.
Crumlin BC ace Evan Metcalfe will wear the Irish light-flyweight vest. Joe Fitzpatrick, Kieran Forde, Christy Joyce, Gary Sweeney, Jack Morrissey and Thomas Conroy will also be representing Ireland.
Talented Dealgan BC middleweight Stephen Broadhurst is included in the squad following his 12-10 win over Wexford’s Eddie Byrne at last Friday’s Box-Off at the National Stadium.
Donegal’s Jason Quigley won gold and the boxer of the tournament award at the 2009 European Youths in Poland/Germany.
