“I Thought my Boxing Career had come to an End’ – John Boyd Promises Impressive Return
John Boyd admits he feared his boxing career was over.
A year on from his last appearance in the ring, the Belfast stylist is finally ready to make his long-awaited return this weekend when he features on the JB Promotions card at the National Stadium.
The return marks a significant moment for the fighter, who had been on the verge of challenging for a BUI Celtic title before his time away from the sport, before a ‘wee health scare’ saw him step away from the ring.
Now back to full health and fitness he is ready to restart his rise.
“It’s great to be back full time training and fighting again,” Boyd said when speaking to irish-boxing.com.
“I thought my boxing career had come to an end, so I’m grateful to be back doing what I love. I feel like this is my debut all over again.”
The road back has not been straightforward.
“It was stressful at the beginning but I knew that sticking to the plan that I’d pull through,” he explained.
“Setbacks are part of life, so I didn’t let it get to me too much.”
The Jay Byrne mentored Belfast man was set to fight Richie O’Leary for the BUI Celtic last year, prompting some to suggest he’ll be back in the title frame if he defeats Jack Swallow over four on the Judgement Day bill.
However, the fighter himself, doesn’t want to look past this weekend.
“I’m not focused on what’s to come after,” he adds.
“I’m going to enjoy fight week and the buzz of it, making weight, getting the hands wrapped and the kit on again and take it all in.”
For a fighter who once questioned whether he would ever experience those moments again, the significance is not lost on Boyd.
And while he may be returning after a year away, he insists fans should not expect to see the same fighter who left the sport last year.
“I feel like a completely different fighter and person since last June,” Boyd added.
“The fans can expect a whole new fighter this weekend. Make sure to tune in.”
