Frampton targets to fight in massive Mexican clash

CARL Frampton targets Leo Santa Cruz and Abner Mares will trade leather in a mouth watering featherweight clash on August 29.

IBF super bantamweight World Champion Frampton had been linked to both American based Mexicans in recent years and was actively pursuing a bout with WBC super bantamweight World champ Cruz.

Indeed criticism was fired the way of Cruz, with people suggesting he was fighting ‘glorified’ sparring partners rather than trading leather with viable challengers.

Frampton, who puts his title on the line against Alejandro Gonzalez in El Paso on Saturday, certainly felt avoided and questioned whether the California would ever get a notable test.

The extent of Cruz’s talent will become more apparent when he fights a fighter who won titles in three weight classes in a tremendous 21-month stretch between 2011 and 2013.

There have been suggestions Frampton might get the winner of the clash in New York next St Patrick’s weekend. However, the pair seem intent of making an impact at featherweight and ‘The Jackal’ has super bantamweight unification as a target before he moves up.
