Eamer Coughlan, Sean Purcell, Paddy Donovan and Paul Ryan joined Tommy Hyde in the quarter-finals of the AIBA World Junior Championships in St Petersburg, Russia today.
But Irish captain Aaron McKenna bowed out following a controversial defeat.
Coughlan forced England’s Lewis Cooley into two standing counts and the ref called a halt to proceedings in the third and Purcell showed his class in a unanimous decision over Serbian bantam Namoja Gavrilovic.
Donovan impressed against Koryan Astoyan and except for needing some medical attention for a nose bleed in the third, stylish Dublin southpaw Ryan was always in control against the game but outclassed Joshua Mataele.
All four boxers, along with Hyde, will compete for at least bronze tomorrow.
McKenna was controversially adjudged to have lost on a split decision to Samatali Toltayev. The Irish skipper forced the pace and found the target with the majority of the cleaner shot against a lively but inaccurate opponent, but the judges leaned in favour of the Kazakh.
Irish coach Billy McClean said that the entire Irish team and management staff were disgusted with the decision, adding that he believed that McKenna clearly won the bout.
Anthony Johnston ceded a walkover today after picking up an illness.
