Chris Blaney scores tough step up win on big BT Sport bill

Navan middleweight Chris Blaney opened the big BT Sport bill tonight in Leicester with a career best win.

The first Irish boxer to feature on a card as part of the groundbreaking BoxNation-BT Sport deal, Blaney took a step up in rounds and a step up in opposition to take on notably game journeyman Christian Hoskin Gomez on the Tommy Langford v Avtandil Khurtsidze undercard at the Leicester Arena.

The Spaniard had previously held Dubliner Ciaran Mullen to a draw and has upset a number of other prospects, but would not shock Blaney who claimed a six round points win.

However, ‘The Ginger Ninja’ was made to work for his W, with Gomez pushing him hard throughout.

The skills of Blaney would win out in the end though, and he took a 58:56 win on the cards.

The step up success sees Blaney improve his perfect professional record to 6(3)-0, while the game Gomez falls to 5(1)-21(2)-3.

Next up for Blaney will be another six rounder against similarly strong, if not stronger, opposition as he seeks to round off a very strong first year as a pro.
