‘Dom The Bomb’ targets Celtic title for Celtic Clash 9

Dominic Donegan  [2(1)-0] is eager to secure a title fight on Celtic Clash 9, but knows the ‘what you want and what you get’ adage applies more in boxing than any other walk of life.

The Cavan fighter wants to move along quickly, but his desire to be fast tracked doesn’t over power the respect he has for his team.

If ‘Dom the Bomb’ had his way he would squeeze in a six rounder fight before the rumoured September return of Boxing Ireland’s Celtic Clash series so he is eligible for a Celtic title shot on what promises to be another All Irish fight influenced card.

However, the relatively new to the game pro is aware he will have to operate at the pace his team set out.

“I want to get in there and fight. I want as many fights as I can. You train hard and you want as many fights as you can,” Donegan told Iris-boxing.com.

“I want a six rounder next, but then again I will see what Jonathan (Lewins) says. He is the boss. I wanted two fours and a six, but it’s not always down to me.

“I hope to get a six rounder before Celtic Clash 9 and maybe that would let me fight for a title on that show,” he adds before stressing he has faith in Boxing Ireland, his manager Stephen Sharp and his coach to ensure he is brought along at the right pace.

“I said it at the start I believe I will be Irish champion in two years and I have a team behind me that can make that happen. They will pick the right fights for me along the way. I have to trust them. I give my opinion but whatever they put on the table I will take. I’ll not shy away from any fight.”

Donegan was talking after securing his second pro win on the Leeside Revolution card over a week ago.

The Irish Army champion really enjoyed the Cork atmosphere and feels the regional show may just be the way to go in terms of creating a vibrant domestic scene.

“I was at York Hall there 3 weeks ago and the crowd that was there is nothing like the crowd here. The atmosphere out there is electric compared to York Hall. Credit to Martin Hogan, that is top class.  We have plenty of fighters. Everyone wants to fight run (regional shows) and you won’t be scarce of boxers or good fights.”

Donegan stopped Adrian Aleksiev at the Neptune Stadium and speaking post the victory claimed the KO came via a shot they had been working on.

“We were practicing that long right uppercut. I knew he would come out swinging. I’d seen clips of his fights and he comes out aggressive, so I was calm, let him come, second attack long jab and a big right uppercut  and I caught him flush. Yet again I listened to my corner and it worked. ”
