2009: Katie Taylor whitewashed Turk Meryem Aslan Zeybek (11:0) in the final of the European Championships in Nikolayev, Ukraine. In the quarter finals the Bray woman scored an opening round stoppage of Swede Kosovare Buzuku, before coasting to an 8:0 win over Bulgarian Denitsa Eliseyeva in the semis.
2002: Limerick’s Andy Lee defeated American Jesus Gonzales (19:17) to guarantee light middleweight silver at the World Youth Championships in Cuba. Earlier in the tournament the future Athens Olympian and WBO World champion knocked out Slovak Ondrej Molnar and Mexican Marco Periban, before outpointing Ukrainian Ismail Syllakh (21:19) in the quarters. In the decider Lee lost out to home fighter Noelvis Veitia (15:32).
1997: Michael Carruth unsuccessfully challenged for the WBO welterweight title in Germany. The 1992 Olympic gold medalist took on champion Mihai Leu of Romania in Aachen but lost on a majority decision (114-114, 114-115, 111-117). It would be the final fight of the Eastern European’s career, and he would retire undefeated following his victory over Dublin’s Carruth.
