Collins: Frampton success could help Ormond get shot he deserves

STEPHEN Ormond will help Carl Frampton become a World champion as he acts as a sparring partner pre ‘The Jackal’s’ IBF World title fight with Kiko Martinez.

And Ormond’s coach thinks the Belfast star could return the favour and play key in securing the Dubliner a home World title fight in the New Year.

The Celtic Warrior Gym boss believes A Frampton win come September 6 could have knock on effect for Irish boxing and the WBO European champion in particular.

If Frampton deposes Martinez of a title for the second time- Frampton took the European belt of the Spaniard last year- it will mean big shows in Ireland and possibly big opportunities for other Irish fighters.

“When Carl beats Kiko Martinez it won’t be just great for him and his team it will be great for Irish boxing and personally I think it will be great for Stephen Ormond,” Collins said.

“Ormond has moved into the World title reckoning and is on the verge of fighting for a World title. If Carl wins there will be more big shows in Ireland and wouldn’t it be great to have a World title double header in Ireland. Cyclone Promotions have had Stephen on there shows and he spars Carl so they obviously respect him and like him. In fact I know Barry likes Stephen so I am sure he is in his thoughts promotionally.

“Stephen also adds a Dublin angle, Barry and his team could bring a show down here. The interest in Stephen has gone through the roof and Dublin fans are crying out for big shows. Stephen has options and there has been talk of a WBO title show and Frank Warren is confident he can secure that for Stephen, but we would love Ormond to fight for a World title in Ireland and with Barry interested and Carl winning a World title it might help that happen.”
