Christopher O’Reilly caps a perfect day for Ireland in Russia
Balbriggan’s Christopher O’Reilly brought the curtain down on Ireland’s first day of fighting at the World Youth Championships in Russia this evening – and joined team mates Paddy Donovan and Brett McGinty in the next round
The Bracken light heavyweight took on South Korean Kim Taek Min in the Round of 32 in St Petersburg and took a unanimous decision win after an exciting slugfest.
The Fingal boxer was comfortable in the first round, a stanza which saw Min require the doctor’s attention twice for a bloodied nose. O’Reilly landed some nice bodywork against the shelled-up Far East fighter.
The bout opened up in the second, with the Korean starting to throw more, but it was again O’Reilly who was landing the more thudding shots, and he rocked Min twice.
Min came chasing in the final round and the Dubliner did have to bite down on the gumshield at times, but managed to stand his ground and finish strong to see out the win.
O’Reilly, is now just two wins away from a medal, and will fight in the Last 16 on Monday evening.
