Billy Walsh to continue as Irish head coach

While rumours continue to circulate that Billy Walsh will soon depart the Irish High Performance Unit, the IABA have confirmed that the Wexford man will take charge of a six-strong Irish delegation at the Feliks Stamm Multi-Nations Tournament in Warsaw, Poland.

Last week it emerged that Walsh would be leaving his post with the Irish team to take charge of the U.S. Women’s squad. The reasoning behind this is believed to be due to Walsh’s lack of control in choosing boxers for the Irish team rather than the financial incentives offered by Team USA.

The IABA have refused to comment throughout the ordeal, but the announcement today would seem to suggest that it is business as usual.

The long-term situation regarding the 52 year old’s future is seemingly yet to be resolved – however, Walsh taking charge of the squad in Poland certainly bodes well.
