World woes as Buckley and Kelly exit after split decision defeats

Regan Buckley and Wayne Kelly bowed out of the World Elites at the last 64 stage on 3-2 split decisions in Ekaterinburg, Russia today.

Kelly lost by the odd judge in five to Matthew Alexander of Trinidad and Tobago in the light-welter class.

The Portlaoise BC man found the target with solid shots in all three rounds of an engaging all southpaw battle but a majority of the judges opted for the counter-punching of the man from the Caribbean.

Finals scores: 29-28,29-28,29-28 to Alexander and 29-28,29-28 to Kelly.

Buckley was edged by Aldoms Suquor over three, three minute rounds in the flyweight class.

Besides being slightly wobbled by a big right, the Indoesian, a quarter finalist at last year’s Asian Games in Jakarta, took the first round, but Buckley, walking down his elusive opponent, came back strongly in the second.

Buckley won a lively third on the unoffical cards but Suquor got the nod – 30-27,29-28,29-28 and 29-28,29-28 to Buckley.

Commonwealth Games finalist Aidan Walsh meets Israeli welter Miroslav Kapuler in the last 64 tomorrow and Kelly’s Portlaoise BC team-mate Michael Nevin is between the ropes on Saturday versus Lithuanian middle Vytautas Balsys.

Antrim’s European champion Kurt Walker, the No. 6 seed in the feather class in Ekaterinburg, faces Columbia’s David Avila in the last 32 of the 77-nation tournament on Sunday and Dublin heavyweight Kiril Afanasev is in against Bulgaria’s Radoslav Panaleev.
