AIBA’s In dept Interview with Katie Taylor

Ireland’s boxing superstar Katie Taylor will be heading to Astana with just one thing on her mind: winning a remarkable sixth successive AIBA World Championship title. The reigning Olympic and European Games champion has had a glittering career, but another gold would set yet another record and undoubtedly establish her as the greatest female boxer of all time.

You are one of the most famous athlete in the World and one of the first women to get an Olympic Gold medal in Boxing at the London 2012 Games. Tell us about this huge achievement?
It’s great to get the recognition in your particular sport. For me, it was a life long dream fulfilled. It didn’t happen overnight. It was long and hard journey up to that point but all worth it. Words cannot describe how great it was.
Rio 2016 Olympic Games will take place in couple of months. Are you confident to qualify and be able to get another gold medal?
I always go into each competition very well prepared and this is no different. I will be doing my best not only to qualify but to get a 2nd gold at Rio.

In your country, women and many of your fellow citizens look up to you? How do you feel to be a role model?
I do take this very serious. I think that it is very important that young people have good role models to look up to. I feel very responsible that I am a good one.

In Astana, you will be defending your 6th title as Women World Champion. What is your secret to stay on top for such a long period? How do find the motivation to keep training every day?
First and foremost, I still love what I do. I think that is very important. There is no real secret to staying on top. It’s always been down to working hard and staying focused. I am very blessed to be able to get up every day and do something that I love.

Last year, you have received the ANOC (association of National Olympic Committees) award. Are these kind of recognitions important to you?
It’s always a privilege to receive these prestigious awards and to have the respect and recognition.

Who is your favorite boxer, athlete and why?
Favourite Boxer: Floyd Mayweather – Because he is undefeated, super athlete, such a universal style of boxing and very hard to beat!
Favourite Athlete. Roger Federer – Amazing flare on the tennis court. Such a gifted player. What I love most about him is his humble attitude.
