Keeler ready to get busy says Collins

Luke Keeler made the most of a somewhat bad situation, claims his coach Pascal Collins.

The Ballyfermot middleweight hasn’t been as active as he would have liked over the last 12 months, partly due to injury, but hasn’t been resting on his laurels.

The former Prizefighter contestant and 2016 Irish title hopeful ideally would have been improving his record, but has used the time to improve in the gym.

The 28 year old, who last fought in September of last year, now has three fight dates on the horizon and Collins believes his charge will show the benefits of extra time in the gym over the coming months.

“Luke is fighting in Dublin this weekend then he is out again in Birmingham in March. He will fight on April 30 show in Belfast if that comes off. It is good for him to be active and have a run of fights,” Collins told Irish-boxing.com.

“There are times when things are not busy for fighters and during that time you have to stay in the gym and keep learning. That’s what Luke has done. He will show that in the ring on Saturday and beyond,” he added before making a similar point re Steve Collins Jr.

“Stevie Jr off 11 months. he is looking great so far so good sparring and everything is looking well. It is full steam ahead for Stevie Jr and Niall Kennedy too they will fight in America in March.”

Collins also fielded questions on the Conrad Cummings links. There were rumours the talented Cyclone Promotions middleweight would fight his fellow Irish 160lbs prospect could meet on the massive Frampton versus Quigg card.

However, Collins claims there was no talk re the bout and suggested it might be one for down the line when both have established themselves further.

“We never called out Cummings, but I do think that would have been a good fight, all I seen was internet rumours.

“If it was offered to us we would have had a look, but it is not one that we are going out of our way to look for. If they win big belts it would be a much bigger fight. Cummings drew with Meli last time out and hasn’t a title we are chasing. There is no real need for that fight yet. I see with the Matchroom, Eddie Hearn is out promoter, Cyclone thing where it came from, but Cummings is probably gone back to the drawing board after the draw. If both get a couple of wins under their belt maybe they can cross paths down the road.
