3 Wins on Day 3 at European Schoolboy Championships
Bernard O’Neill – IABA Press Officer
Ireland recorded three wins out of six on Day 3 of the European Schoolboy Championships in Croatia.
Paddy Myers, Francie Maughan and Jason Irwin had their hands raised in victory in Zagreb.
Myers and Maughan produced top drawer performances to see off Russian pair Shilov Aleksander and Rakitin Ilya on unanimous and split verdicts and Irwin took all three judges with him at the expense of Gramos Berisha of Kosova.
Matthew Tyndall was unlucky not to make it four on the bounce after being edged out on a split verdict by Kofan Maksym of the Ukraine, and John Sweeney, boxing to record a third straight win over Russia, lost on a unanimous decision to Timur Avdoian.
12 Irish fighters now find themselves 4 and a half minutes away from a medal in the Adriatic state.
Irish captain Gerard McDonagh bowed after a close three-rounder with Denmark’s Mikail Harmanci
Myers, Maughan, Eoghan Quinn, Jerome Lonergan-Gartland, Thomas Doherty and William Hayden are in action later today.
